Gov’t-picked Polish judge critical of its stance on court

WARSAW, Poland – A judge promoted by Poland’s governing party to a top court has defended the authority of the court’s rulings over the government.

The court, the constitutional Tribunal, is at the heart of a political conflict in Poland after the governing party changed regulations regarding the appointment of judges and the court’s functioning. The court has ruled that those steps were against the constitution, but the government refuses to acknowledge and implement that ruling.

On Tuesday, one of the judges appointed to the court by the governing party told reporters that the court’s rulings are binding and should be implemented by the government.

Judge Piotr Pszczolkowski spoke after he presided at a court session that ruled on a private case unrelated to the conflict.
