Canada’s economy grew at 0.1 per cent in April, Statistics Canada reports

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says the country’s real gross domestic product increased 0.1 per cent in April — the fourth month of growth in a row.

The agency says service industries were behind much of the growth.

Statistics Canada says almost all major industrial groups posted gains, including wholesale and retail trade, the finance and insurance sector, the arts and entertainment sector and the transportation and warehousing sector.

However, public administration was down.

The agency also says goods production fell 0.3 per cent because of a drop in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction.

There were also declines in construction, while manufacturing, utilities and the agriculture and forestry sector rose.
