Jets select defenceman Joshua Morrissey with 13th pick in NHL draft

NEWARK, N.J. – The Winnipeg Jets have selected defenceman Joshua Morrissey with the 13th pick in the NHL draft.

The Calgary native is on the small end at six-feet tall, but he makes up for that with plenty of offence. Morrissey had 15 goals and 32 assists for the Western Hockey League’s Prince Albert Raiders last season.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and amateur scouting director Marcel Comeau understood they probably weren’t going to get an NHL-ready player at No. 13, so they went into Sunday thinking about the long-term future.

Dan Marr of NHL central scouting called Morrissey a dynamic skater who can reach “top speed” quickly. He also singled out Morrissey’s hockey sense.
