Lyles leads Canada’s U19 basketball team to win and into world quarterf-finals

PRAGUE – Trey Lyles poured in 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Wednesday to lift Canada into the quarter-finals of the FIBA U19 men’s world basketball championships with a 78-62 win over Argentina.

Tyler Ennis added 17 points and four rebounds while Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored 16 points for the Canadians (3-3), who needed a victory to advance.

Canada never trailed, and broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the opposition 25-12 and taking a 42-23 lead into halftime.

“We’re very proud of our boys today to be able to advance to the final eight teams of the world championship considering all the adversity we’ve gone through,” said Canada’s head coach Roy Rana. “It just shows the mental toughness of this group and their willingness to come together and make the sacrifice. We’re excited to move on to the next round and we’ll be ready.”

Canada will face either the U.S. or Serbia in the quarter-finals on Friday. Those two teams played later Wednesday.
