Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,145.68 down 32.70 points):

Surge Energy Inc. (TSX:SGY). Oil and gas. Up 14 cents, or 2.69 per cent, at $5.34 on 6.91 million shares. The Calgary-based company said it will exceed management’s 2013 estimated production rate of 12,000 barrels of oil per day due to “the recent continued successful drilling results” at its Valhalla property in Alberta. It also announced that it has closed a previously-announced $247 million in equity financing.

Whitecap Resources Inc. (TSX:WCP). Oil and gas. Down 14 cents, or 1.31 per cent, at $10.58 on 5.73 million shares.

Iamgold Corp. (TSX:IMG). Miner. Down four cents, or 0.94 per cent, at $4.20 on 4.98 million shares.

BlackBerry (TSX:BB). Wireless technology. Down 50 cents, or 0.49 per cent, at $10.17 on 4.43 million shares. The stock has been in the red for a fourth trading day in a row due to weaker first-quarter results released late last week and a warning about further losses in the next quarter.

Mirabela Nickel Ltd. (TSX:MNB). Miner. Down half a cent, or 7.14 per cent, at 6.5 cents on 4.07 million shares. The Perth, Australia-based miner revised its guidance for 2013 to production between 17,000 and 18,500 tonnes of nickel concentrate from 22,000 to 24,000 tonnes. It says the weaker production forecast is due to lower quality ore, current disruptions on nitrate supply and ongoing maintenance work.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Up 19 cents, or 1.24 per cent, at $15.51 on 3.48 million shares.

Toronto Venture Exchange (881.18 up 4.19 points):

Adira Energy Ltd. (TSXV:ADL). Oil and gas. Up half a cent, or 50 per cent, at 1.5 cents on 5.83 million shares. The company entered a private placement with Pelagic Investments Ltd. for $5 million, in exchange for about 50.4 per cent issued and outstanding common shares of Adira.

Selwyn Resources Ltd. (TSXV:SWN). Metals explorer. Unchanged at 8.5 cents on 3.56 million shares.

Company reporting major news:

Capstone Infrastructure Corp. (TSX:CSE). Power generation. Down 12 cents, or 3.09 per cent, at $3.76 on 208,816 shares. The Toronto-based company signed a deal pegged at $68.9 million, plus debt, to acquire Renewable Energy Developers Inc. The agreement expands Capstone’s footprint with the addition of 95 megawatts in operating wind power facilities in Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B). Telecommunications. Down 85 cents, or 2.01 per cent, at $41.52 on 1.78 million. The telecom giant launches a new loyalty program starting on Monday. The national rewards program will be launched in stages with a full roll out expected at the end of the year.

Sandvine Corp. (TSX:SVC). Technology provider. Down 16 cents, or 7.58 per cent, at $1.95 on 2.23 million shares. The Waterloo, Ont.-based company posted a 27 per cent increase in revenue, helping it end the second quarter in the black. Sandvine posted a profit of US$900,000, which reverses year-earlier loss of $4.2 million.
