MONTREAL – A major fire has erupted after a train carrying gas derailed in Lac-Megantic in Quebec’s Eastern Townships.

Several explosions have been reported in the community 250 kilometres east of Montreal, and at least part of the downtown core has been evacuated.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties.

According to early reports several train cars exploded and a fire that can be seen for several kilometres has spread to a number of homes.

Several neighbouring municipalities have reportedly dispatched emergency personnel to Lac-Megantic to help deal with the disaster.
