Lost hiker rescued by helicopter after being stranded on top of a cliff

COQUITLAM, B.C. – A hiker is being treated for minor injuries after being rescued from the top of a cliff at a Metro Vancouver mountain.

Michael Coyle from Coquitlam Search and Rescue says crews had spent Saturday night searching for the 25-year-old man after RCMP reported him missing.

The hiker wore only a shirt, shorts and runners, and took no equipment with him when he headed up a trail toward a lake on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam, east of Vancouver.

Coyle says searchers finally spotted the hiker in a gully and perched on a cliff on Sunday morning, and two rescuers were dropped down from a helicopter to get him.

Coyle says the area is known to be treacherous because the downhill slope tends to take hikers into the gully, where people have been found dead before.

The rescued 25-year-old, who grew up in Vancouver but goes to school in South Africa, was found dehydrated and with a cut on his arm.
