Fuel leak forces evacuation of West Kelowna gas station

WEST KELOWNA – A fuel spill caused an evacuation at a West Kelowna Petro Canada on Sunday.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue were called at around 12:00 p.m. Sunday, July 9, to the spill at the Petro Canada on the corner of Ross Road and East Boundary Road, according to a media release.

Crews found a motorboat had leaked more than 100 litres of gas into its hull and engine compartment.

Because of the amount of fuel leaked, the gas station was evacuated and the firefighters requested help from the Kelowna Fire Department’s Hazmat Team and provincial Ministry of Environment. The gas was sucked out of the boat with a vacuum truck and into a holding tank.

The gas station remained evacuated for several hours and pedestrian and vehicle traffic was temporarily diverted around the scene, with road closures lifted around 5:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
