Vernon semi truck crash sparks small grass fire

VERNON – Emergency officials were all over an early morning highway incident yesterday that ignited a small grass fire.

Police say a semi-truck crashed on Highway 97 near the Kekuli Bay Campground Tuesday, July 11, just after 1 a.m.

“The driver managed to get hung up on the median when he lost control of the commercial vehicle,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says in a release.

He says it jumped onto the cement no-post meridian on the right hand side of the road.

The unit, which is registered in Saskatchewan, ended up skidding 300 to 500 feet before coming to a stop, damaging many of the cement no-post meridians, Moskaluk says. The trailer came to a stop and was wedged on top.

The Vernon Fire Department attended because sparks from the friction caused a small grass fire. It was quickly extinguished.

The uninjured 25-year-old driver from Saskatoon was issued a violation ticket.

There were some brief traffic disruptions Tuesday morning while the accident was cleared.
