Convicted NY mob boss wins reduced sentence for co-operating against fellow gangsters

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The convicted one-time head of the mob family that inspired the film “Donnie Brasco” will no longer have to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

A federal judge reduced the life sentence Wednesday for Joseph Massino to time served — about 10 years. Massino is expected to be in jail for another two months, then remain under FBI supervision for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors had requested the reduction to reward Massino for testifying against fellow gangsters.

The 70-year-old former boss of the Bonanno crime family has been doing time for several slayings. They include the execution of a mobster who vouched for undercover FBI agent Donnie Brasco in the 1980s.

Brasco’s story became a movie starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.
