Opera singer, contortionist part of concert series for beluga whales in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – A motley crew of artists has come together to perform for some unusual and weighty guests — thousands of beluga whales in northern Manitoba.

Starting next week performers — including a contortionist and an opera singer — will be performing exclusively for the sub-arctic mammals as they gather near the mouth of Hudson Bay.

Laura Magnusson has been going to Churchill for the past three years to play music for the whales as they congregate over the summer.

She says the giant mammals seem to enjoy all kinds of music, which is piped underwater through a special speaker system.

Magnusson says the whales seem genuinely interested in connecting with humans and have even mimicked some of what they’ve heard.

The performance series is running all summer and can be viewed by humans online at becomingbeluga.com.
