CHILLIWACK, B.C. – Mounties are warning the public not to take their home’s security for granted after a four-year-old boy was almost abducted from an apartment complex in Chilliwack, B.C., this week.
Police say a man knocked on several doors on Tuesday before the child answered, at which point the suspect walked into the home and tried to shake a caregiver’s hand.
When the startled caregiver refused, police say the man left the apartment, but not before picking up the family’s kitten and an old toy wrestling belt, and grabbing the hand of the four-year-old.
The boy refused to go any further once the pair reached the lobby, forcing the man to leave with only the toy belt.
Security-camera footage from a nearby business helped police determine the man’s appearance, and patrols scouring the area arrested 41-year-old Jonathan Landsman.
Landsman has been charged with abduction of a person under 14 and made his first court appearance on July 9. (The Canadian Press)
