Parades nails five boots to lead Stampeders 22-14 over struggling Alouettes

MONTREAL – Nik Lewis caught a touchdown pass, Rene Paredes went 5-for-5 on field goals and the Calgary Stampeders held off the Montreal Alouettes for a 22-14 CFL victory on Friday night.

Brandon London had a TD catch for Montreal (1-2), which struggled to move the ball for a second straight game. Defensive back Ed Gainey made it close when he blocked a Rob Maver punt and ran it in 38 yards for a TD with 3:48 left in the game.

The teams meet again in Calgary next Saturday.

With last week’s 19-11 defeat to Winnipeg, it was the first time since September, 2006 the Alouettes have lost twice in a row at home — a setback for new head coach Dan Hawkins.

The Stampeders improved to 2-1 as Paredes stretched his field goal string to 25 in a row, third best in CFL history. And Lewis caught his 63rd TD pass to move into second place in Stampeders’ history behind Tom Forzani.

Kevin Glenn was sharp filling in for the injured Drew Tate at quarterback and found an impressive new receiver in former QB Brad Sinopoli, who had a handful of catches including a one-handed grab for 42 yards in the third quarter.

The Alouettes looked their old selves as they scored on their first possession, marching 81 yards on 11 plays capped by Anthony Calvillo’s 19-yard TD pass to London at 7:50 into the game.

They didn’t get another first down until late in the half, as Glenn led drives topped by Paredes’ field goals of 20 and 22 yards.

Another drive aided by a long pass interference call ended with Glenn’s nine-yard TD pass to Lewis, which was tipped at the line and dropped into the veteran receiver’s hands. It gave Calgary the 13-7 halftime lead.

Paredes’ boots of 18 and 39 yards were the only scoring in the second half until Gainey’s punt block TD finally got the 23,184 at Percival Molson Stadium on their feet.

Parades added another from 39 yards in the final minute.

The Alouettes saw veteran guard Scott Flory leave with an injury in the third quarter.

Since their return to Montreal in 1996, the Alouettes have only lost their first two home games twice, in 1996 and 2007.

Calvillo threw a TD pass in a 20th straight game, one short of his personal best, and he passed the 79,000-yard mark in career passing yards, stretching his own record.

Notes: The Alouettes wore a black sticker on their helmets for victims of last week’s train disaster in Lac Megantic, Que. They also collected funds for the Red Cross at the gates… Montreal guard Andrew Woodruff has been placed on the nine-game disabled list with an undisclosed injury, reportedly a concussion. He was replaced by American Michael Ola … Linebacker Jonathan Hefney was among Calgary’s scratches.
