Alabama girl honoured for role in saving grandmother

ATMORE, Ala. – An 8-year-old south Alabama girl is being honoured for her role in helping save the life of her grandmother.

Sheriff’s officials in Escambia County say second-grader Kenleigh Madison was with her grandmother in Atmore when the woman’s breathing machine stopped working. She has emphysema.

WPMI-TV reports the girl called 911 to get emergency crews to the home, and she directed them around an impassable driveway.

Deputy Jeff Weaver says the girl knew exactly what to do, and she even called back to check on rescuers.

Kenleigh says she was scared and started crying, but she loves her grandmother and wanted to help. The woman was taken to a hospital and spent a week in treatment.

Weaver and Escambia Sheriff Heath Jackson presented Kenleigh with a life-saving award recently.
