BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Latest on a sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded the driver of a stolen vehicle who they say led officers on a car chase in the Birmingham, Alabama, area. (all times local):

Authorities say a man has died after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy during a car chase with officers in the Birmingham area.

Shelby County sheriff’s officials said in a statement that 21-year-old Isaiah Core III of Trussville died Wednesday. The deputy opened fire on the driver of a stolen vehicle early Wednesday at the end of the chase, when the driver left Interstate 20.

Officials say he was ordered to get out of the vehicle, but instead he backed up “in an attempt to injure officers” and was shot.

Authorities didn’t release any information of the officer. They said the officer who shot Core is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases.

A second occupant of the vehicle was not injured and has not been charged.
