Judge denies guilty plea without a lawyer

KAMLOOPS – A B.C. Supreme Court judge has advised a Kamloops man not to plead guilty to second-degree murder.

Jaipreet Singh Toor faces one charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 79-year-old father, Harsewak Singh Toor, who was stabbed to death in North Kamloops last year. Toor is expected to appear in court again Sept. 23 to resolve the matter.

Justice Hope Hyslop denied the request from the unrepresented accused. He recently fired his lawyer and hasn't hired a new one. 

Toor initially elected a trial by judge and jury to begin this month. He also pleaded guilty yesterday on a separate unrelated assault charge for an offence dating back to Aug. 13, 2012.
