New review of Hullcar aquifer ordered by new environment minister

SPALLUMCHEEN – A new, independent review of the pollution in the Hullcar aquifer has been commissioned by the new NDP Minister of Environment, George Heyman.

Roughly 150 people have been on a drinking water advisory for over three years due to high nitrate levels from farming operations in the area.

Heyman says the review is to ensure that agriculture is also consistent with the provision of clean drinking water. 

According to a ministry release, an independent expert will be commissioned to lead the review, which is due at the end of September, 2017. Legal director with the University of Victoria’s Environmental Law Centre, Calvin Sandborn, will act as a special advisor.

The two-month long review will look at actions and decisions taken so far. Once completed, it is expected to provide recommendations on how to improve regulations and implement best practices for the agricultural sector.
