OAKVILLE, Ont. – Brendan Steele is the early clubhouse leader after shooting a 65 for 7-under par 72 in the first round of the Canadian Open.
It’s a fast start for the 30-year-old from Idyllwild, Calif., and puts him in good position to contend for a share of the $5.6-million purse at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
Scott Gardiner, Matt Kuchar and Scott Brown are all tied for second after shooting a 66 for 6-under par.
David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., is the top Canadian, after shooting a 70 for 2 under.
Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., struggled in the first round, triple bogeying on the par-4 14th hole. He recovered on his final five holes to finish the round at par.
