Brazilian driver runs over protesters, kills 1

RIO DE JANEIRO – A man has been arrested in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo for allegedly driving into a crowd of protesters, killing one and injuring several others.

Police marshal Julio Cesar Brugnoli says the driver, a man of about 60, has acknowledged driving into the crowd in the city of Valinhos

He says the man claimed he was stuck in a traffic jam caused by a protest organized by the far-left Landless Workers Movement when protesters started throwing rocks at him.

Brugnoli told The Associated Press on Thursday that witnesses did not corroborate this, saying the protest was peaceful.

A video circulated on social media and Brazilian television shows a car driving straight into a large crowd of demonstrators.
