El Salvador to dock pay, fire striking hospital workers

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – El Salvador’s health minister says the government will begin docking the pay of and firing striking hospital workers who have now been off the job for a week.

Unions are responding to Health Minister Violeta Minibar’s announcement by threatening to intensify their strikes.

Talks between the two sides have failed to resolve the heated dispute.

Union leader Salvador Castaneda said Thursday that it offered to end the strike if the government meets certain conditions including not docking pay and fulfilling a wage increase that was approved by the country’s legislature.

He said Mejia told them there isn’t enough money to pay the approved raises.

Thousands of Salvadorans have been turned away from hospitals where only emergency cases are being taken.
