Evacuation alert for properties between Sitkum Creek and Crescent Bay
CASTLEGAR – More evacuation alerts issued yesterday, Aug. 12, because of a 70-hectare wildfire near Nelson.
As a precautionary measure, the B.C. Wildfire Service issued a release last night, Aug. 12, saying a wildfire has prompted the Regional District of Central Kootenay to issue an evacuation alert between Sitkum Creek and Crescent Bay.
B.C. Wildfire Service has personnel on site, supported by air tankers, but this wildfire is burning in steep and difficult terrain, says Fire Information Officer Karlie Shaughnessy.

On Aug. 12 there were 14 new lightning-caused wildfires in throughout the Southeast Fire Center, however, many of those fires were not threatening to any communities or structures because there were in high alpine areas, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
The Southeast Fire Centre extends from the U.S. border in the south to the Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and the Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east.
The Southeast Fire Centre includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District.
