World No. 5 Roger Federer withdraws from Rogers Cup tennis tournament

MONTREAL – Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup men’s tournament.

Federer’s withdrawal was announced by tournament director Eugene Lapierre on Friday. No reason was given for why the world No. 5 pulled out of the event.

“I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week,” Federer said in a statement. “It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future.”

Federer has twice won the Rogers Cup, in Toronto in 2004 and 2006. He also lost in the final to Novak Djokovic in Montreal in 2007.

Federer has participated in the Canadian Masters event on 10 occasions.

He has endured a run of disappointing results of late. He came into Wimbledon as the defending champion, then lost in the second round to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky.

He then lost to Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis in the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships before being stunned at home in the second round of the Swiss Open by Daniel Brands.

Federer dropped to fifth in the ATP rankings after Wimbledon, marking the first time he has fallen out of the top four in over a decade.

Serbian Viktor Troicki and Croat Marin Cilic will also not be competing in the tournament. Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Spaniard Pablo Andujar will now be in the main draw.
