UPDATE: Human-caused wildfire near Naramata contained
PENTICTON – The local fire chief says crews were lucky they knocked down a wildfire in the South Okanagan quickly last night.
The blaze broke out just after midnight above Smethurst Road about 3.5 kilometres east of Naramata last night, Aug. 15.
Naramata Fire Chief Tony Trovao says the fire, just a few kilometres off the Kettle Valley Railway Trail, had the potential to threaten homes, but was contained before it burned more than one hectare of bush.
Trovao says they have little doubt the fire was human caused.
Fire information officer Rachel Witt says, along with local firefighters, two B.C. Wildfire crews are working the fire today, Aug. 16.
She says it is burning in grass and open timber and is currently uncontained, but exhibiting minimal fire behaviour.
