The Latest: Suspect in killings of mom, child denied bail

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Latest on an arrest in the shooting deaths of a mother and her 4-year-old daughter (all times local):

A man changed in the killings of a Southern California mother and her 4-year-old daughter is being held without bail.

Twenty-two-year-old Brandon Colbert of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been charged with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of 26-year-old Carina Mancera and her daughter Jennabel Anaya in Long Beach.

Prosecutors say Colbert hid behind a sign and opened fire at the mother, daughter and the child’s father as they returned from a grocery store Aug. 6.

Colbert did not enter a plea at his initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon. His attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.

Colbert’s arraignment was ordered continued until a new date in December.

Prosecutors say an Oklahoma man charged in the murders of a young mother and her 4-year-old daughter in Southern California hid behind a sign before opening fire on the family with a shotgun.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office says 22-year-old Brandon Colbert has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder as well as special circumstance allegations of lying in wait.

Colbert is expected to be arraigned Tuesday. He was arrested Sunday.

Twenty-six-year-old Carina Mancera and her daughter Jennabel Anaya were shot and killed in Long Beach as they walked home with the child’s father after going to the grocery store on Aug. 6.

If convicted Colbert faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Police say they have not determined a motive.
