Wildfire evacuees from Loon Lake can return home

KAMLOOPS – The Elephant Hill wildfire is not an imminent threat so property owners in the Loon Lake area can return home tomorrow afternoon.

The fire at Elephant Hill is still active, however, the threat has diminished to the point that people can return to their homes at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 20, according to Thompson Nicola Regional District media release.

Work addressing dangerous trees along public roadways and ensuring services such as community water, 911 Emergency, hydro and telephone are available is ongoing in the Look Lake area for the safety of people who will return home tomorrow.

Loon Lake will remain on evacuation alert because the Elephant Hill fire is still active. Officials urge residents to stay vigilant and remain prepared to evacuate at any time.

In the event that residents will need to evacuate the area again, as much advance notice as possible will be given, however, at times only limited notice can be provided
due to changing conditions.

An evacuation order remains in effect for areas surrounding Loon Lake, so these areas are restricted and RCMP will remain the area to monitor and restrict access to those areas.

A re-entry meeting has been arranged for any property owner returning to the Loon Lake area.
