Cornet defeats 11th-seeded Kirilenko at Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament

TORONTO – Alize Cornet of France defeated 11th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko in early second-round play at the Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament.

The unseeded Cornet, ranked No. 30 in the world, needed just under two hours to complete the 7-5, 7-5 victory at Rexall Centre.

Fourth-seeded Li Na of China beat Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-4 and seventh-seeded Marion Bartoli of France defeated American qualifier Lauren Davis 6-0, 6-3.

American Sloane Stephens needed three sets to get by Germany’s Mona Barthel 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Eugenie Bouchard of Montreal will take on defending champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the late match.

Top-seeded American Serena Williams is also in action this evening against Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.

Play was delayed for a short time earlier in the day due to wet weather.
