Proposal to split electoral Area D entering final phase of public consultation

PENTICTON – Residents of the Regional District’s rural Electoral Area D recently received a brochure containing information about the proposal to split the electoral area into two as the district enters a final round of public consultation of the proposed changes.

The proposed changes are the result of a governance study initiated in Electoral Area D in 2015/16.

The proposal would see the area split into an east and west entity, through Skaha Lake and along the west edge of Okanagan Falls.

The eastern portion would remain Area D while the new western area would become Area I.

The split would divide the existing population of Area ” at 6,659 into 3,367 in proposed Area D and 3,292 in proposed Area I, in addition to creating a new director’s position, bringing the total number of directors in the regional district to 19.

The estimated annual additional cost to the taxpayer for an average residential household worth $373,371 is expected to amount to $1.68 per household.

The regional district is using the recommendation from the governance study as well as feedback received from the two rounds of public consultation – the first being through initial release of the governance study, the second being this final round – to consider a proposal to the province relating to division of Area “D”.

If approved, the division would take place in early 2018, in advance of the 2018 local elections, at which time a new area director would be elected.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen plans two open houses on Sept. 12 in Kaleden and Okanagan Falls. Meeting times are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Kaleden Community Hall and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Okanagan Falls Community Centre.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
