Ex-city commissioner get 4 years, 3 months in bribery case

MIAMI – A former Florida city commissioner has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison following a wide-ranging corruption investigation.

A U.S. Department of Justice news release says 56-year-old Luis Santiago was sentenced Thursday. The former Opa-locka commissioner previously pleaded guilty to a bribery conspiracy charge.

Authorities say Santiago conspired with former city manager David Chiverton, former assistant public works director Gregory Harris and others to obtain thousands of dollars in illegal cash payments from businesses and individuals in the South Florida city, located north of Miami.

Chiverton and Harris previously pleaded guilty to corruption conspiracy charges. Demetrius Corleon Taylor, the current mayor’s son, also pleaded guilty to participating in the bribery scheme.
