Focus on the Markets

TORONTO – The Canadian dollar closed at 96.82 cents U-S, up 14-100ths from Tuesday’s close.

The S-and-P/T-S-X composite index fell 2.89 points to 12,639.30.

Volume at 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time was 357.59 (m) million shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 113.35 points to 15,337.66.

The Standard and Poor’s 500 lost 8.77 points to 1,685.39.

In the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold futures for December contract rose 12 dollars, 90 cents U-S to 1,333 dollars, 40 cents per ounce.

The crude contract for September inched up two cents U-S to 106 dollars, 85 cents per barrel.
