Someone lit a chair on fire in the McArthur Island skate park

KAMLOOPS – Sigh.

For months, firefighters across the province have consistently warned of the dangerous conditions in B.C. this fire season, but this is getting ridiculous.

Shortly after 8 last night, Aug. 30, Kamloops Fire Rescue crews responded to McArthur Island's skate park.

Someone set a chair on fire in the middle of the skate park, Platoon Capt. David Ferguson says.

"It's a pretty stupid thing to do," he says. "It’s bad enough when accidents occur but when people are deliberately lighting fires… it’s frustrating."

Firefighters across B.C. have been ready to go at a moment's notice this summer, with wildfires scorching more than one million hectares of the province this year.

Each time the smoke from surrounding wildfires rolls into Kamloops, residents are reminded of the wildfire situation affecting communities near the city.

Yet people still fail to have common sense when needed, so officials are left to remind people of blatantly obvious things.

"I think everyone knows you shouldn’t light furniture on fire," Ferguson says.

So for those who do need a reminder, don't deliberately set fires, don't carelessly toss your lit cigarettes out your car window, and don't have campfires while a province-wide ban is in place.
