Gyro Park centre of attraction with concert, Punjabi celebration this weekend

PENTICTON – Summer activities are winding down in Penticton and the South Okanagan with the season’s final long weekend.

Rock the Sun concert series presents Bees and the Bare Bones and Luke Wallace at Gyro Park on Friday, Sept. 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. The free concert series is sponsored by the Downtown Penticton Association.

Community and Farmers' markets are operating in full force for the last long weekend of summer with the Penticton Downtown Community Market and Penticton Farmers' Markets back to their usual locations in the 100 to 300 blocks of Main Street. The Community Market takes place Saturday, Sept. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the Penticton Farmers' Market operates Saturday, Sept. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Okanagan Falls Community and Farmers Market operates Sunday, Sept. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street in Okanagan Falls with kids' activities, local musicians, and fresh fruits and produce.

The Summerland Rotary Market takes place Sunday, Sept. 3 on Main Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

South Okanagan Punjabi Mela is a celebration of Punjabl culture, performances and cuisine. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3 at Gyro Park in Penticton. The no cost event contributes all proceeds to the B.C. Canadian Cancer Foundation. Everyone is welcome. For more information contact Rav Matharoo at 250-486-0452.

Meyer family vineyards presents a harvest dinner with Joy Road, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Meyer Family Vineyard located at 4287 McLean Creek Road in Okanagan Falls. The Meyer Family partners with Joy Road Catering to provide an interactive evening of terroir focused food and wine. Cost is $125 plus GST.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
