Dozens protest the ousting of Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi at Queen’s Park

TORONTO – Dozens gathered at the Ontario legislature on Saturday to protest the military coup that ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi from power.

People chanted for freedom and the end of the military regime that took power in the beginning of July while others brandished signs and waved Canadian and Egyptian flags.

One of the protest organizers, Yaser Haddara, called on the Canadian government to remove its ambassador to the North African country in order to put pressure on the Egyptian leaders behind what he calls an illegitimate coup.

People also held up graphic photos depicting victims of violence in Egypt.

Egypt’s government is considering outlawing the Muslim Brotherhood following clashes between armed supporters of president Mohammed Morsi and security forces.

The government says violent clashes led to the death of 173 people on Friday but protesters at the Toronto rally say there were far more deaths than the government reported.

On Wednesday, riot police, military helicopters, snipers and bulldozers broke up two sit-in protests in Cairo by Morsi supporters, leaving more than 600 people dead and thousands injured.
