Red Sox broadcaster laments son charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed girlfriend

BOSTON – Longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy says he cannot describe his disgust and remorse after his son pleaded not guilty to stabbing his girlfriend to death.

Remy said Saturday that he and his wife are “heartbroken” after his son, Jared, allegedly killed Jennifer Martel on Thursday night.

The elder Remy released the statement through his official Twitter account, marking his first public reaction after his son allegedly killed Martel. Jared Remy allegedly stabbed the woman a day after he was released from custody in a separate assault case against the victim.

Martel’s four-year-old child was in the apartment, and was not hurt. The child is now in the custody of child welfare officials.

Jerry Remy called the killing a “senseless and tragic act,” saying his thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s mom and her family.
