Canadian filmmaker and emergency room doctor arrested in Cairo: report
TORONTO – A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirms that two Canadians have been arrested amidst the deadly turmoil in Cairo.
Caitlin Workman says Canada’s embassy in the Egyptian capital is in contact with local authorities and is providing consular assistance, however, she says privacy concerns prevent her from releasing any details.
The Toronto Star reported that Toronto based filmmaker and York University professor John Greyson was arrested in Cairo on Friday along with Tarek Loubani, an emergency room doctor from London, Ont.
The newspaper said Loubani telephoned a friend in Toronto on Friday and told him that he and Greyson were being arrested by Egyptian police, but said little else.
The friend said he then contacted the Canadian government.
Cairo has been ground zero for escalating protests by supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsi that have seen hundreds of people killed and injured.
