The Latest: Former gymnast files civil suit against doctor

LANSING, Mich. – The Latest on a former USA Gymnastics doctor being charged with criminal sexual conduct (all times local):

A Los Angeles woman has filed a civil lawsuit against a former USA Gymnastics doctor charged in Michigan with sex abuse involving a girl under 13.

Attorney Brian McKeen says the suit was filed Tuesday in Ingham County against Larry Nassar.

He says his client was sexually assaulted in 1996 and 1997 during treatments for lower back pain when she was a 14-year-old gymnast in East Lansing.

Two former USA Gymnastics national team members have filed separate civil lawsuits in California against Nassar and USA Gymnastics.

Nassar pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Those alleged assaults occurred between 1998 and 2005. The girl was not a gymnast.

Nassar is a former associate professor of osteopathic medicine at Michigan State University. He was fired in September.

Michigan’s attorney general says charges against a former USA Gymnastics team doctor are the “tip of the iceberg” as authorities investigate roughly 50 complaints filed with police.

Bill Schuette said Tuesday that Larry Nassar of Holt posted bond after he pleaded not guilty earlier in the day to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in his home with a girl under 13. The alleged assaults occurred between 1998 and 2005.

Schuette says the girl wasn’t a gymnast, a patient or a family member.

He says his office is working with the FBI and a U.S. attorney’s office in Michigan.

The 53-year-old doctor has been under scrutiny since two gymnasts, including a member of the 2000 U.S. women’s Olympic team, accused him of sexual abuse during medical treatments.

A former USA Gymnastics team doctor has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in his Michigan home with a girl aged 6 to 12.

The plea was entered Tuesday by Larry Nassar of Holt, who was arraigned by video from jail. He was arrested Monday while running an errand.

The alleged assaults occurred between 1998 and 2005.

Magistrate Mark Blumer, who set bond at $1 million, said the girl wasn’t a gymnast. Nassar’s attorneys said the family hopes to quickly post the 10 per cent needed to be freed.

The 53-year-old doctor has been under scrutiny since two gymnasts, including a member of the 2000 U.S. women’s Olympic team, accused him of sexual abuse during what were supposed to be medical treatments.
