Multiple Shakespeare productions feature in 2014 Stratford Festival schedule

STRATFORD, Ont. – The Stratford Festival unveiled its 2014 season today, featuring more than dozen plays with a theme of “Madness: Minds Pushed to the Edge.”

Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino says the lineup contains plays in which the protagonists are driven to extremes, adding that this leads to great drama for audiences to watch.

Cimolino says the plays feature characters whose minds are unbalanced by forces such as love, war, poverty, age and sexuality.

The upcoming season coincides with the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. Five Shakespeare productions are on the playbill to commemorate the playwright’s birthday, including two versions of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

The season will also feature “King Lear;” “Antony and Cleopatra;” “King John;” “The Beaux’ Stratagem;” “Mother Courage;” “Hay Fever;” “Alice Through the Looking-Glass;” “Christina,” “The Girl King;” and the musicals “Crazy for You” and “Man of La Mancha.”

Tickets go on sale in early November for members and early January for the general public.
