B.C. murder case for 95-year-old dementia patient put off until next month

VERNON, B.C. – A 95-year-old dementia patient who’s been charged with murder in B.C.’s Interior has had his case put off until next month.

John Furman was charged with murder after his 85-year-old roommate was killed at a care facility in Vernon.

The RCMP have said they received a report of an assault Sunday night at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital’s residential care facility.

Furman was not in court for a scheduled hearing on Wednesday, but his lawyer appeared on his behalf.

Furman is expected to undergo a mental-health assessment before his next date, which is scheduled for Sept. 25.

The 95-year-old murder suspect is a dementia patient.
