FAA: Over 100 cancelled arrivals on day facility evacuated

LEESBURG, Va. – The Federal Aviation Administration says there were more than 100 cancelled arrivals at four Washington-region airports on a day when an FAA facility that handles flights had to be evacuated.

The FAA said in a statement that preliminary data shows a total of 116 cancelled arrivals, nine departure delays and seven delays of airborne flights at the airports Monday. The delays occurred at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Richmond International Airport. The reason for each cancellation or delay isn’t specified.

On Monday evening, construction work fumes forced the evacuation of an FAA facility in Leesburg, Virginia, that handles flights over the area. For about three hours, the facility stopped accepting new flights and handed off airborne flights to other facilities.
