McLaughlin scores four goals as Salmonbellies even Minto Cup with Warriors
NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – Eli McLaughlin scored four goals and added two assists to lift the New Westminster Salmonbellies to a 9-7 victory over the Whitby Warriors in Game 2 of the Minto Cup.
Josh Byrne added two goals and three assists and Anthony Malcolm had a goal and four assists as the Salmonbellies pulled even with the Warriors in the best-of-five series for Canada’s box lacrosse junior championship.
Michael MacDonald and Austin Shanks each scored twice for Whitby in a back-and-forth battle that saw the Warriors take the lead three times.
The Salmonbellies pulled ahead for good on McLaughlin’s fourth goal of the game at 14:21 of the third period, making it 8-7. Malcolm scored less than two minutes later to seal the victory.
New Westminster goalie Frank Scigliano stopped 45 shots while his Warriors counterpart, Alexis Buque, made 32 saves.
The Warriors took Game 1 on Thursday by a score of 16-6. Game 3 will be played Saturday.
