Naramata wildfire knocked down quickly

PENTICTON – Firefighters put out a wildfire sparked in Naramata last night.

Naramata fire chief Tony Travao says they were called to the grass fire above Gawne Road in Naramata around 8 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 11.

“Flames could be seen from quite a distance. The actual location was at the end of Workman Place Road," Travao says in an email.

He says firefighters arrived at the end of the cul-de-sac, where a number of trails are located, to find a rank two or three wildfire beginning to candle between trees.

Twenty-three firefighters from the Naramata department began cutting a fire guard while a water supply was found for the department’s water tender.

B.C. Wildfire firefighters arrived on scene a short time later, and between the two crews, the fire which grown to an area of 100 x 60 feet, was knocked down.

“Quick response by our agencies was crucial,” Travao says, adding the fire is being investigated as suspicious.
