Syrian opposition leader to press for more Canadian help in meeting with Baird

MONTREAL – The head of Syria’s main opposition group is expected to press Canada for more help when he meets this week with Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

George Sabra, president of the Western-backed Syrian National Council, is scheduled to meet Baird Wednesday in Montreal.

Sabra says he wants Canada to be a stronger international voice against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He says the Syrian government’s purported use of chemical weapons should give the international community an even greater sense of urgency.

Sabra says he no longer believes a political solution is possible.

But Baird says it’s the only way out of the conflict and says he will continue to work with international partners.
