B.C. coroner identifies man fatally shot by police at store in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – The BC Coroners Service has named a 38-year-old man who was fatally shot by police in Vancouver.

Police responded to a call of an alleged robbery and stabbing at a Canadian Tire store last Thursday and confronted a man now identified as Daniel Rintoul.

An officer was stabbed in the head and stomach before Rintoul was shot and died outside the store.

Both the officer and a store employee, who had been slashed and stabbed during an attempted robbery, are expected to recover.

An 82-year-old man who was briefly taken hostage was unhurt.

Chief Const. Adam Palmer has said an investigation is continuing and a search of the suspect’s home provided evidence of possible criminal intentions beyond the robbery.

The Independent Investigations Office said Monday it is seeking witnesses to the incident.

The IIO, which investigates police-involved deaths and serious injuries, said video footage of the scene shows a number of key witnesses who were filming the incident outside the store.

The agency is also asking for video footage that may have already been provided to the police department, the media or posted online.
