UPDATE: Firefighters knock down blaze in the BX area of Vernon

VERNON – Firefighters fought a fire in the BX-Swan Lake area of Vernon last night.

Witnesses at the scene said six trucks were involved in the fire fight at a private residence on Baker Hogg Road. The fire started about 10 p.m. Sept. 12. 

This morning, Sept. 13, BX-Swan Lake fire chief Bill Wacey said the fire started in a garage that had been converted into a storage facility.

Crews faced some challenges due to the renovations, including false floors and extra walls, however they were able to knock down the fire. According to witnesses, there were two houses, a barn and several farm animals on the property, however Wacey says no other structures were threatened by the fire. 

"It was pretty solidly built," Wacey says of the structure. "The fire never managed to break out anywhere outside."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Wacey says there is nothing to suggest it is suspicious.  

Crews were on scene until about 3 a.m. putting out hot spots, and a fire watch was in effect throughout the night.

Fire cause and origin investigators will be back on the scene today looking for a cause.
