Political solution in Syria more difficult in ‘dangerous new phase’, says Baird
TORONTO – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says a political solution to the crisis in Syria is becoming more difficult as it enters “a dangerous new phase.”
Speaking in Toronto, Baird called an attack on a UN convoy in Syria this morning “abhorrent,” and said Canada condemns it “in the strongest terms.”
The UN says snipers opened fire on the convoy carrying a team investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons outside of Damascus.
The Syrian government accused rebel forces of firing at the team, while the opposition said a pro-government militia was behind the attack.
Some Western countries have said an international military response against the Syrian regime should be an option, but Baird says it’s important to first get the facts from the UN team on the ground.
Opposition Leader Thomas Mulcair says he supports first working through international law, but if the United Nations concludes military action is needed, Canada could be a part of that.
