Romania: new culture minister sworn in amid opera dispute
BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania’s president has urged the country’s new culture minister to resolve a major crisis at the country’s main opera house that cost her predecessor his job.
President Klaus Iohannis who officially appointed Corina Suteu as culture minister Wednesday, noted there was “an inflamed public mood,” connected to the culture ministry.
He urged her to use “tact, dexterity and indulgence” in tackling problems. “Clearly the situation at the Opera needs to be resolved.”
Former Culture Minister Vlad Alexandrescu was fired Tuesday after he failed to mediate a month-long crisis at the Bucharest National Opera. The opera has had four interim managers and three shows have been cancelled since April 4.
Suteu was a senior official in the culture ministry, and previously headed the New York office of the Romanian Cultural Institute.
