Teens reclaim social media by spreading #cyberlove

PENTICTON – A couple of Summerland highschool students are encouraging their peers to spread the love online through a new campaign.

Caitie Shaw and Dan Nixon started the #cyberlove campaign through the Youth Empowerment Project to connect with and empower youth all over the world to create positive change.

The campaign kicks off on October 10—World Mental Health Day and the anniversary of Port Coquitlam teen, Amanda Todd’s death. The Empowerment Project “is challenging people all over the globe to fill their social media with positive messages,” Shaw and Nixon said in a press release. “The goal is to send a message to someone who really needs it, whether it be a friend or a stranger.”

They will use the hashtag #cyberlove to collect messages during the 30-day campaign. Shaw and Nixon hope youth can take back social media and turn it into a positive medium again.
