Former Blazers, NHL goalie to talk mental health in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – A former Kamloops Blazer and NHL goalie will be in Kamloops tomorrow to discuss his struggles with mental illness.

Corey Hirsch played for the Blazers for four seasons in the early to mid-1990s before moving up to the AHL and eventually the NHL.

But in the summer of 1994, he contemplated ending his own life. Hirsch opened up about his struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder earlier this year in a Players' Tribune article titled Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark.

Hirsch will be speaking at the Sandman Centre tomorrow, Oct. 4, before the Blazers game as part of the Canadian Mental Health Association's 25 years of service in the city.

The health association says in a Facebook event post it will celebrate Hirsch's story of survival and recovery, reminisce about the past 25 years in the community and look ahead to the future.
