UPDATE: Extensive fire damage at North Okanagan cedar mill
LUMBY – Dozens of firefighters from multiple departments joined forces today after a major blaze broke out at a Lumby mill.
Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton says the fire at Valley Wood Mill on Dure Meadow Road was reported around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3.
“It was fully engulfed upon arrival,” Clayton says. “I knew it was a going to be a hard one so I started calling in mutual aid.”
The fire chief says everyone at the mill got out safely and there are no injuries.
Back-up came from from Lavington, Coldstream, BX-Swan Lake and Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Departments. In all, Clayton says about 45 firefighters attended, and they were all needed.
“At one point in time, everyone was doing something,” he says.
The fire caused extensive damage to the main building of the cedar mill, Clayton says.
No cause has been determined yet and fire crews will remain on scene throughout the night.
