Oduro, Marshall second half goals give Columbus 2-1 comeback win over Impact
MONTREAL – Chad Marshall and Dominic Oduro scored in the second half as the Columbus Crew posted a 2-1 comeback victory over the Montreal Impact before 20,210 at Saputo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Crew (10-14-5) ended a four-game unbeaten run for Montreal (13-7-6), which lost at home for only the second time this season.
Marco Di Vaio, the Major League Soccer scoring leader with 18, scored his seventh goal in the last five games in the first half for Montreal.
Columbus went 2-0-1 against Montreal this season.
Montreal wasted some glittering chances in the first half, but got the opening goal in the 23rd minute.
With players still upfield after a corner kick, Patrice Bernier lofted a pass over the penalty area that Matteo Ferrari headed into the middle for Di Vaio, who nodded it past Matt Lampson.
Di Vaio was stopped from in close early in the second half, but then Columbus captain Federico Higuain, the best player on the field for both teams, spearheaded the comeback.
Higuain’s curling free kick to the left of the area was headed in by Marshall in the 66th minute.
Then he laid another perfect pass into the box for Oduro, who managed to stay onside and get the end of a boot on the ball to put it past Troy Perkins in the 79th.
The Crew improved to 2-0-1 under coach Brian Bliss, who took over Sept. 2.
It was the start of a busy week for Montreal, which plays a CONCACAF Champions League match Tuesday in San Jose and then returns home to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.
