Ricky Gervais’s new series “Derek” is now streaming on Netflix and New York magazine’s Vulture blog has recapped why it spawned controversy when it premiered in the U.K. last year. Critics accused Gervais of mocking the mentally handicapped with his portrayal of the titular character Derek Noakes. Gervais denied the charges and said his character is “based on those people you meet who are on the margins of society. Nerds, loners, under achievers.” He described Derek’s persona as less extreme than Mr. Bean. http://vult.re/17SH8XZ
